Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the drive was without honor and the boot sector died with no warnings or health alerts of any kind.

Of course, I have multiple backups, and the data on the drive itself was not corrupted. Still, it’s a sign for new drives and an opportunity for a major operating system update. This leads to another problem: Nvidia has declared the very expensive graphics card and paired GPU to be “legacy” and isn’t supported in the current releases of CUDA or Linux drivers.

Typically Linux works well with older hardware (5 years is considered several lifetimes in this world), but Ubuntu 26 didn’t work OOB (out-of-box) and neither did Fedora 44. You can always make something work with Linux, but sometimes it takes more effort and kernel hacking than expected or desired.

So time for a rethink of the entire configuration of the desktop for my day job as well as the blog support computers. Fortunately there have been enough contributions to the blog fund so there is a small reserve to deal with this crisis, just a matter of rebuilding things and moving some existing computers around. Of course this also means resetting all the security keys and other associated nonsense, which is time consuming.

Meanwhile, the desktop is up and running so with a few more tweaks things should be running and probably better than before for the blog graphics.
