Last night was pretty rough in the US Midwest, with tornadoes and severe thunderstorms causing damage and deaths across the region. Here are the NWS Local Storm Reports as of 6am; expect more as the reports are updated.

Here is what it looks like on satellite this morning, certainly a strong system continues to moves eastward:

Locally in coastal Georgia the incoming system is causing some concerns about the 200th St. Patrick’s day Parade in Savannah. Here is the hour-by-hour forecast from NWS:

While there may be rain and some thunderstorms this evening, and again Sunday afternoon, Saturday at parade time should be clear, with rain chances around 10%.

Saint Patrick is recognized as a Saint in both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. Among the legends is that he drove the snakes out of Ireland – snakes, of course, being an allegory for paganism or evil, since there doesn’t seem to have ever been any snakes there since the last Ice Age. Be that as it may, it has certainly given rise to some great memes …

That said, in the midst of your festivities (or better yet before) please take a moment to consider the history of the Saint and why the Church honors him as the patron of Ireland.
