Gulf Blobwatch Continues

Based on the enthusiasm of the global models, NHC has upgraded the chances that a tropical system of some kind could form in the Gulf of Whatever later this week to 50%. Here’s the view from GOES West, also showing Hurricane Rachel (now moving away from Mexico) and a system expected to form off the Pacific coast of Mexico in the next few days:

Satellite imagery showing the NHC Tropical Weather Outlook with the storm 'Rachel' and areas of interest in the Eastern Pacific, including regions marked with percentages indicating the likelihood of development.

Looking at GFS, we see a low end hurricane making landfall in Mississippi on Sunday morning …

You will be seeing lots of noise over this. Bottom line is at this point we don’t have an INVEST area because there’s nothing there yet – only potential – so no dedicated model guidance. There are no “magic works” in the outlook, so as the muchly missed Nicholas would say, at this point it’s still only “elevated levels of meh.”

That said, there is potential for something tropical to impact the Gulf Coast and southeast later this week. All the moisture ahead of and associated with the potential system are looking to dump a lot of rain in the southeast …

Weather forecast map showing predicted accumulated precipitation over the Gulf of Mexico, with color-coded gradients indicating various precipitation levels in inches.

Areas of the MS/AL/FL coast, as well as the Frogmore Metroplex (Coastal GA/SC Lowcountry) could see over 6″ of rain between now and next Monday, so there is potential for flash floods, urban street flooding and otherwise soggy conditions in the usual places.

In Downtown Savannah, we’ve had 1.56″ of rain since Friday, more looks to be on the way today. Here’s the accumulation over the next three days across the region …

Many thanks to those who have contributed to the blog! There has a surge of donations in the last couple of days, it’s helped cover some of the recent deficit. The scheduled monthly donations are especially appreciated, even if small, since it’s a fixed known income and really helps during the quiet times. And I fully understand that works both ways – all those $5 expenses at your end add up to a lot, just as they add up here!

If you appreciate the blog, the best way to get it is to subscribe to the emails. You can subscribe and also donate to keep it going at this link.

While email subscriptions (which are free) are the best way to get these screeds, you can also follow us on Musk’s Madness X/Twitter (@EnkiResearch), Telegram,  or BlueSky.

The internet is rapidly becoming a dystopia, far from the vision of an open, free exchange of information that it began with. In administrative news, Meta/Facebook has made it official that they are only allowing TWO outside links per month for organizations that don’t pay them for the privilege. During a real-time hurricane or ice storm event impacting the US, I often post two or three times a DAY or more. It would cost about $500/month to continue to post blog links there as I have in the past, about 1/3 of the current level of donations. Therefore, I am suspending regular posting on Meta properties for now. If enough people donate and request it, I’ll resume regular Facebook posts with links, but otherwise I can’t see duplicating posts there just to feed Zuck’s gulag.

  1. I like the animations, but could they be presented in a manner that they could be single stepped as well as run automatically. In this manner the viewer could slow down the steps.
