NHC started posting a yellow blob of doom on the tropical outlook yesterday, and while the short term outlook is 0%, this morning the seven day outlook is up to 30%.
No magic words, not even to “monitor,” so nothing to do, but will watch.
Couple of systems in the Central Pacific, but only of interest to fish and fish related activities. Should fade out well before annoying Hawaii.
Couple of invests but no active systems in the West Pacific. WP98 is dumping a lot of rain in Vietnam and southern China.
Fortunately has been quiet the last week after Kauai/Niihau was hit by Lowell. It looks to have caused around $1 Billion in impacts, with power still out in places and a good bit of damage. Non-emergency travel to Kauai is not recommended, and many hotels/resorts are closed so if you had an upcoming trip expect cancellations. Not seeing a lot in the news about it with all the 9/11 anniversary coverage and shenanigans in Washington, not to mention the growing energy crisis.
For some reason the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks really bothered me, so since there were no major storms I didn’t post anything recently to avoid raging out and disrupting the solemnity of the occasion. Of course I have lots of stories, but maybe it’s time to leave this to history.
I will leave you with this brief note to think about: My first trips to the Middle East and Afghanistan were in the 1980s, supporting the missions who were training and supplying our allies, Al Qaeda, in their fight against the Soviets, despite dire warnings they would turn on us. My second set of visits was after the 9/11 attacks supporting our missions who were fighting Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Today, given satellite technology and my mostly retired status, I don’t have to travel but am watching as, again as against strong advice we are again training and supplying our allies, Al Qaeda (under different names but the same groups and ideology), as they are fighting “Iranian proxies” but mostly murdering innocent civilians. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that won’t end well either.
Forty years of interventions in the Middle East by politicians in both parties who ignored the advice of experts and opted for expedient military solutions or economic bullying instead of using the international system of diplomacy and international law that we created post World War II, thus squandering the lives of so many. If there is one lesson I have learned in my time “on government service,” it is that wars don’t start the day the shooting starts, but in the years and decades before, and the people who do start them don’t have to fight them.

I, too, found this a particularly hard 25th anniversary, knowing how far we’ve fallen since 9/12 & who we’ve become.
