Winter storm update Friday morning (10 Jan 25)

The highly anticipated (hyped?) winter storm is entering the deep south this morning:

Snow is spreading across the region, mostly in North Georgia but as of 5:30am a small patch of snow flurries looks to have passed near Metter, but it didn’t look like much and seems to be dissipating.

The forecast hasn’t changed much, other than the chances of freezing precip or problems near the coast may be a bit lower. No significant precip on the radar so far, and other than a few patches any precipitation will be light. No need to cancel any travel or plans in coastal GA or the Low Country (other than rain later), but be careful driving over overpasses and bridges this morning if it seems there has been and drizzle or rain just in case.

Far inland (west and north of Macon, Augusta) snow is starting to move in, with sleet and freezing rain likely to follow over the day. That makes for a miserable travel situation. WSFO Peachtree City (responsible for the Atlanta and North Georgia area) says it best:

A Winter Storm Warning remains in place for portions of north
Georgia that will experience hazardous or impossible travel
conditions today. Travel is not advised within the warning area, and
should be avoided if possible. If you must travel, ensure that you
have an extra method of staying warm, an extra flashlight, food, and
water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road
conditions for the state can be obtained by calling 5 1 1. Downed
trees or powerlines may also occur within the warning area,
leading to power outages. Several counties in central Georgia
remain under a Weather Advisory. These counties may experience
hazardous travel due to snow and ice, especially this morning.

The most northern and eastern environs of Frogmore (Charleston, Statesboro) might get freezing rain later but for most of the coastal GA/SC area it will just be cold rain after 9am.
