TLDR: Shanshan is raining out over southern Japan. Rain from the remnants of Gilma are approaching Hawai’i, a tropical depression has formed in the Indian Ocean on the Pakistani coast, and there are two blobs of doom in the Atlantic.
For most of this, the longer version isn’t much longer than the short version. Shanshan made landfall yesterday, and while there has been some wind damage the biggest problem is the slow moving storm is dumping a lot of rain on southern Japan, causing widespread flooding and mudslides. At least four have killed and 99 injured but those numbers will go up for sure.
A depression formed in the Indian Ocean, forecast is for it to move westward across the Arabian Sea. May cause some brief disruptions to the oil and gas trade, and the US has two Carrier Strike Groups operating in the general area of the Gulf of Oman …
In the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center has two blobs of doom tagged. Neither has any magic words (advice for action), and neither is an invest area with dedicated computer track model guidance, so nothing to say/do at this point.
Some of the longer range models show a major storm developing in the Gulf and smiting New Orleans in about 12 days, and I’ve seen some of the usual fear mongers flogging it. Some runs hit Florida, some Texas, others show no significant storm at all. So way too early to worry about it until cycle to cycle model runs are more consistent.
