As expected things are becoming increasingly messy this morning with snow and freezing rain (which is of course the biggest problem) spreading east…

There are warnings across most of the country …

And in Coastal GA and the Lowcountry of SC (Frogmore Metroplex) there was some freezing drizzle this morning and the warnings were extended south a bit …

That should end at sunrise, but in Beaufort County (and especially inland) be careful if traveling this morning just in case there are slick patches. Here’s the advisory from the WSFO in Charleston (soon to be renamed North Frogmore):

The big wave of precipitation is building over Mississippi:

and will be moving east and north throughout the day …

Believe it or not, across the southeast there is some potential for thunderstorms and even “thundersnow” (lightning and thunder while snowing … here’s an article on it) as these air masses collide. Here is the current lightning probability map and an animation of lightning observed over the last hour (as of 7:30am) from GOES:

Will be watching this afternoon to see if anything severe develops over Georgia.
Air travel is snarled with lots of flight cancellations. Looking at the FAA traffic status, lots of major airports closed …

The Atlanta area terminal board has lots of red …

Expect a mess through tomorrow, probably Wednesday before things get anywhere even close to normal in the air traffic system.

It would be a nice treat if you could arrange a gentle snow, maybe an inch, with no
ice. Kids here grow up never seeing snow. I’m from Beaufort…and had to go to
college to see more than a touch of snow.
Thanks…Arnold Young
I have only experienced thundersnow twice, both times when I lived in north Atlanta. It was confusing at first, but pretty cool.
“North Frogmore”… this Beaufortonian loves it!
My daughter and family live in Richmond VA and your forecasts were completely accurate about their area
