Greater Frogmore Metroplex Weather Notes (11 Dec)

For those in the Southeast there is a strong cold front moving through today. There looks to be three bands of rain on the way …

Rain bands from the approaching cold front.

The first is over the coast now, the second inland over a line from Tallahassee-Dublin-Augusta as of 5am and moving rapidly east. This line has a few embedded thunderstorms, but looks like nothing severe. There might be a stronger one form in there, but this is what a classic “low CAPE high shear” event (fancy way of saying not a lot of energy but a lot of low level wind), and the Storm Prediction Center has the region in only a marginal risk of severe weather.

This graphic shows some of the interesting parameters. The upper left is the rain accumulation between 1am and 7am, the upper right is the type (green is rain, blue is snow, red is ice). Lower left are convective parameters, lower right is storm relative helicity. Neither are interesting/exciting/concerning.

Here is the same map for 1pm this afternoon, as the front should be exiting the coast …

So bottom line: rain, maybe a rumble or two from a thunderstorm, some gusty winds, nothing really to worry about. North Georgia might see some snow flurries in the mountains, more likely in Western North Carolina, Atlanta probably won’t get any frozen precip so expect spaghetti junction to be its usual joyful experience.

    1. Frogmore, the hub of the metroplex, is in SC roughly halfway between SAV and CHS. It has a fierce rivalry with Pelion, SC. The latter has the economic advantage with its annual cockroach races, but Frogmore Metro is getting a Bucky’s. We’ll see. Neither city can hold a candle to Denmark, SC, with its world famous bakery.

  1. Your weather info is alway great .
BUT THE BEST IS GREATER FROGMORE METROPLEX….
I agree with you…the entire southeast is all just various locations relative to FROGMORE! I just love your site.

  2. Do I need to cover frost sensitive plants tonight? I live about 1 mile from the Frogmore airport.

    1. Low is forecast for 38F in the Heart and Soul of the Southeastern United States tonight, so should be OK.
