Helene 5pm Update (Tue, 24 Sept)

Making an exception to the no frequent posting rule because weather radios are going off along the east coast of GA/FL with tropical storm watches – and at least the far southern part of SC will likely get them as well. As noted this morning that’s normal and expected, and no cause to panic … Helene is expected to be a large storm, with winds along the east coasts expected to reach tropical storm force Thursday overnight in to mid-day Friday. Here’s a map of the 5pm forecast from NHC:

As can be seen the satellite presentation is improving hourly, by morning should be even more impressive … here are the last couple hours in Infrared and visible wavelengths:

The track shifted a bit towards Yucatan, but the track beyond that didn’t. The previous notes on impacts from this morning are still the “best estimate” of impacts; will hopefully be more nailed down in the morning when Helene is in the Gulf – and likely a hurricane. The big variable in my mind locally is how local authorities will react. We should also hear more about that in the morning.

  1. Have you applied a hypothetical cost for this thing? You may have and I missed it.

    1. Yes, it’s on the maps and I think I mentioned it this morning – looks like $10 to $16 Billion, depends on a) if Tampa gets a side swipe and b) how much chaos reaches Atlanta.
