Aurora chasing

Despite the satellites and computer models, like other kinds of weather space weather forecasting has good days and bad days. The last few days have been pretty frantic, with some surprises both good (Friday night’s show) and disappointing (last night). Although there will be another wave of particles and an intense G5 storm expected this afternoon east coast US time, the forecast for tonight as of 8am is for a pretty typical display, being limited to the northern tier of the country …

Still, things change, a few hours difference can mean another spectacular display (or nothing at all), so check the NOAA space weather dashboard (link) for updates this evening to see if it’s worth going out (and, in coastal GA/SC at least, hoping the clouds don’t get in the way if it is!).
