Super Typhoon Man-Yi hits Luzon; Sara dissipating

After a brief landfall on Catanduanes Island, Super Typhoon Man-Yi has made landfall in Baler Bay on Luzon, tracking across the island about 100 miles north of Manila.

Man-Yi is the sixth major storm to hit the Philippines in a month. At least Man-Yi seems to be drier than recent events to hit the island, but unfortunately the severe winds will cause significant damage, as will the storm surge around and north of landfall.

Sara is dissipating as it approaches Belize. Although NHC is still carrying it as a tropical storm, even they admit that is being “generous.” The biggest problem with Sara has been (and will continue to be) the slow movement which, as those who experienced Debby in coastal GA and South Carolina know, a slow moving storm dumps a lot of rain. Areas of Honduras have reported over 40 inches so far! The north coast of Honduras may get 8″ more over the next 5 days, and areas of Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico may see 5-10″ from the storm as it breaks up over Central America.

Elsewhere, no activity in the Atlantic or East Pacific. The Southern Hemisphere hurricane season is getting underway, Cyclone Bheki is a Saffir-Simpson Category 3 storm headed in the direction of Mauritius and Reunion, although it should be a decaying tropical storm or depression by the time it gets there.
