Geomagnetic storm in progress

The sun has been very active lately, with a huge sunspot group moving across the earth facing side. There have been at least five coronal mass ejections (CME) over the last week, the first arriving this afternoon and more over the weekend. You can use the slider to see what the sun looks like in two different wavelengths this afternoon using the slider below. The region causing the rukus is now in the lower right:

The main thing this will do is create some impressive auroras, visible perhaps even as far south as North Georgia and Alabama, but better chances in Kentucky poleward. There may be some power grid transients, mostly up north, and some disruptions to GPS and other satellites are possible. But it’s not likely you’ll notice unless something breaks that shouldn’t.
