At least in Downtown Savannah the snow total was unimpressive. My snowboard measured a paltry 0.25″. The Savannah Airport reported 0.5″, Charleston airport 0.7″. Some spots apparently got a lot more, a report from Bluffton of 3″.
Further north and inland the totals were impressive. Charlotte got a record about on snow, officially 11″ at the airport but a foot or more in many places. In North Carolina saw 10″ all the way to the coast. Air traffic is disrupted across the nation both for the storms and another partial government shutdown is in progress.
Locally, the problem this morning is ice: there are a *lot* of reports of iced over bridges and slick spots on the roads. Our steps and sidewalks in midtown Savannah are very deceptive. There are areas of crunchy snow with no ice under them – likewise, there are areas of classic “black ice” – clear ice that you can’t see unless the light is at the right angle, and everything in between:

So be super careful going out this morning – travel advisories are in effect for most of coastal and inland Georgia and South Carolina. It’s also very cold – temperatures in the low 20s to teens inland, with the wind the wind chill temperatures dipping below 10F in gusts! So usual advice dress in layers, and again with the ice don’t go out if you don’t have to.
It won’t warm up until after noon, but this should clear up today. We’ll have to see if melt/refreeze is a problem in some areas but this amount of snow/ice might be able to melt/sublimate today. Will post again after more coffee (this afternoon).

Thanks Chuck for your reporting! Spot on. Thomas Sq. will melt and survive to face the sunshine!
Thank you so much. I have told SO many people about you.
Our heating unit broke last year the night of the storm and was unable to be repaired for three months, so we are grateful for a warm house this time around.
Are we going to have a repeat of this nonsense later this month? Woke up to a frozen pipe!
It’s way too early to tell. I never get excited about the model forecasts over 7 days out – technically those are outlooks, not forecasts. 5-7 days it gets interesting, for winter precip/storm forecasts five days is when it gets serious in the deep south.
I sheltered three street cats inside last night along with my indoor three. You can imagine it’s a little tense in the house. Is it safe to let them back outside this afternoon, or are we dipping to dangerous temperatures again tonight?
Back down to 22 tonight so I’d keep them in. Mon/Tue below freezing for a couple hours but not so brutal wind.
Thank you for taking care of them!
