Snowmageddon 2025?

The much anticipated (hyped) set of winter storms has arrived. There is going to be a disruptive (as WPC is calling it) system moving across the country this weekend:

The tail end of this one looks to cause another round of severe thunderstorms across the south central states tomorrow (Sunday) according to the SPC:

As it progresses eastward, the Frogmore Metroplex (Coastal Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina) will get cold rain on Monday, but nothing severe or icy.

Later in the week another system will cause some rather cold (but not unusual) conditions across the region, and possible snow as far south as Mos Eisley (AKA Atlanta Hartsfield/Jackson International Airport). Here is the GFS snow forecast …

But that is all later in the week. NOAA has a good timeline for preparations:

You’ll note it says “a few days” not “two weeks or more” as the clickbait weather sites would have you think. As another reminder, FEMA has a winter weather prep page (link). And Southern Living has some tips for dripping your faucets.

For what it’s worth, we plan to implement water dripping here in midtown Savannah (about 40 miles south of Frogmore) as a precaution Tuesday evening if trends continue, as highs will only be in the 50’s and lows may hit the 20’s for three successive nights.

For those of you who are geography impaired 😛 I’m working on a post explaining why Frogmore is the center of known space, as well as a post or maybe video explaining where to find hype-free info on upcoming winter weather.

  1. Thank you for trustworthy reporting and delivery with an appreciated sense of humor!

  2. As someone from an actual cold climate, dripping faucets is not sufficient to prevent frozen pipes when the temps are in the 20s. You need to run a thin stream. I’ve seen plenty of dripping faucets frozen solid.

    1. There are a lot of variables in this – if you’re talking cold soaked, low 20’s, you’re right, you need more of a stream. But here in Savannah we aren’t really cold soaked (and aren’t forecast to be), and it’s likely upper 20’s, and only below freezing for a short time, so if the water is moving much at all it won’t freeze.

    1. I grew up in Beaufort; Frogmore ( a special place) is on the way to the Beach. I am very familiar with Frogmore, and would be pleased to tell you about it/it’s people and it’s way of life. Arnold Young ayruthyoung@gmail.com if you email, give me your phone number.
