Rafael a cat 3, Yinxing leaves the Philippines, Savannah floods (again)

Rafael is a pretty impressive Category Three storm this morning, here in IR since the sun isn’t up …

click to embiggen.

The storm is expected to do a loop or stall over the central Gulf as the strong system to the north (that brought rain to the southeast) blocks its forward motion then turns it south, where it should weaken. NHC does recomment those in Yucatan and the southwestern Gulf (Bay of Campache) monitor the storm … also note the yellow blob of “meh” to the east near Puerto Rico, that should remain a rain event as it moves westward, but NHC does have it tagged at 20%:

Elsewhere, Yinxing remains a powerful storm as it moves into the South China Sea after inflicting more damage on the already suffering northern Philippines …

Well, Savannah had another heavy (but not record) rainstorm, and again there was street flooding. Sigh. Yes, it was a lot of rain in a relatively short period of time, but the only reason there was significant flooding (much less boat rescues) is incompetence. I’ve studied the interaction of hydrology, engineering, and government for 30 years, all over the world, so I’m not just some internet troll on a rant. There is no excuse for what goes on here. People tend to blame civil engineers, but for the most part it isn’t their fault: it is simply abysmally bad urban planning, poor maintenance, and a lack of political will to actually solve the problem rather than speak platitudes, blame nature, and shovel some money at contractors in half measures that don’t address the core problems. It is the fault of the MPC (metropolitan planning commission) and city/county councils who approve excessively rapid and poorly designed developments that continually exceeds the carrying capacity of the infrastructure.

It’s embarrassing for what should be a “world class” city.

  1. And Pooler is following along the same path of rapid expansion wherever there’s open land with minimal planning for the infrastructure.

  2. Thank you! As a not even 3 year resident I’ve been surprised at the apparent lack of official expertise, despite a named(?) city dept., along with a complacent citizenry.

  3. Well said and certainly on point. When I had my music store on Waters Ave in the early 2000’s, our parking lot would flood all the time. Glad I don’t live or work in Midtown anymore. Thank you for sharing your brilliance. -Anne

  4. Speaking of the flooding, my street(Goebel right off of President) flooded for the 6th TIME THIS YEAR. We normally only see this about once a year. Besides the engineering, I blame the golf course for the trench they dug years ago to drain water off of their property. It gushes out like a raging river during these rain events and it overwhelms the 4 drains near us. I am over it!

  5. Dana, just wait until they get done out near Hyundai plant and all of the constant building downtown, all out of greed and poor maintenance. We are literally drowning slowly…. 😭
