Japan, Hawaii storm updates (26 Aug 2024)

TLDR: Hawai’i brushed by Hone, will see only remnants (hopefully) of Gilma next weekend. Shanshan tracks weaker and more to the west, reducing impacts. The Atlantic (yawns, goes back to sleep).

Tropical Storm Hone passed about 160 miles south of Honolulu this morning (as a minimal hurricane last night Hawaii time) after jogging by the Big Island yesterday. The radar this morning (ET) shows heaviest rain offshore but bands still passing over the islands and a flash flood advisory is still up for some areas:

Another storm is on the way, Hurricane Gilma. Fortunately it should decay to at or below depression strength before passing near or over the Islands next weekend, but may bring more rain, and heavy waves will continue along both north and south facing beaches so be careful. Here are the combined swaths …

On the other side of the Pacific, Typhoon Shanshan continues to make forecasters look bad by trending further west, with a weaker landfall intensity forecast. That’s good new for Japan, with estimated economic impacts now below $2 Billion USD for all the major models:

The Atlantic continues to be boring. Enjoy the break!

  1. In the name of all that is holy – what exactly has Kumamoto done to anger the gods? This small, provincial – nay, even bucolic – prefecture on the bottom of mainland Japan (with the cutest (royalty-free) mascot ever (search for “Kumamon”)) known mostly for pastoral views, hiking trails, and traditional clay craftware has in the last 5 years or so been subject to large-scale floods, landslides, devastating earthquakes, bridge collapses, volcanic eruptions, dogs and cats sleeping together… and now (another) typhoon making landfall.
Maybe they should stop eating pork or (more likely) shellfish.
